Learn how to paint this cute black cat step-by-step!

Materials:

  • Canvas: 12×16 wrapped canvas (or other rectangle size)
  • Acrylic Paints: Primary colors + black & white
  • Paint Brushes: Large 1″ Flat, Medium Bright, Medium Round, Small Round
  • Cup of water, rag or paper towel

Step 1:

Block the canvas in with shades of blue using a large flat brush and white+blue paint keeping it lighter (more white) toward the center of the canvas and darker around the edges (more blue). Tip: You can add a tiny amount of yellow to your blue to create some teal vibes and or add some red to your blue to create a deeper darker shade of blue with violet vibes.

Step 2:

Using the medium round brush (mix blue+ yellow+white= Green) make different ratios of green by mixing different amounts of each paint together. Add small horizontal strokes with different shades of green clustered toward the top and bottom of the canvas. Also add a shadow under the lily pads with dark purple (red+blue).

Step 3:

Using the medium or small round add the lily flowers to the lily pads using red+white=pink mix a few different shades and layer the petals in a “V” shape and add vertical and diagonal strokes coming from the “v” shape. You can use a smaller round brush to add layers. Layer in some shadows underneath with light purple (blue+red+white= light purple) and also reflect the pink below some of the flowers as well.

Step 4:

Add the cat with the small brush and black paint. You can paint the cat first with light blue to make sure you like the shape before you color it in with the black paint. Paint the circle for the eyes with green and then color around with black and add pupils. The nose is a pink upside down triangle. Reflect the cat with blue paint and horizontal wiggles. Highlight the cat with light blue on the body and white in the eyes, add white water ripples under the cat to add some movement.

Step 5:

Add finishing touches! You can layer more to any part of the painting to personalize it. Make sure to sign your artwork in any way you like when you are done.
